Keep Your Child Safe on Every Journey

When it comes to protecting your child, nothing is more important than the right car seat. Road traffic collisions remain one of the leading causes of child injuries, and the right seat used correctly can make all the difference.

Our guide will walk you through the essentials of choosing and using the right child car seat for every stage of your child’s growth.

Why Child Car Seats Matter

Car seats aren’t just a recommendation – they’re the law. They save lives. A properly fitted seat reduces the risk of serious injury by keeping your child secure, protecting their head, neck, and spine during sudden stops or collisions.
Every journey, no matter how short, requires the right restraint.

What the Law Says

  • Driver’s responsibility: The driver is legally responsible for ensuring all passengers under 14 are properly restrained.
  • Under 135cm or 12 years: A child must use an appropriate car seat.
  • Over 135cm or 12 years: A booster is no longer legally required, but the adult seatbelt must be worn.

Choosing the Right Seat for Each Stage

Newborn to 2 years old

Rear-facing baby seat

  • Use a rear-facing baby seat from the very first journey home.
  • Never place it in the front seat if an airbag is active.
  • Rear-facing provides the best protection for your baby’s delicate head, neck, and spine. Keep them rear-facing as long as possible.

Toddlers (2 years old – 6 years old)

Rear-facing or forward-facing seat with an internal harness or shield

  • It is recommended to keep your child rear-facing for as long as possible.
  • Keep your child rear-facing for a minimum of 2 years, but up to 4 years if possible.
  • Ensure the straps fit snugly. Bulky coats should never be worn under the harness. Instead, strap your child in and place a blanket over them if needed.
  • Keep your child in this type of seat until they are at the maximum height/ weight for this seat.

Children 6–12 years or until they are at least 135cm tall

High-backed booster seat

  • Switch to a high-backed booster seat.
  • This lifts your child so the adult seatbelt sits safely across their chest and pelvis, not their neck or stomach.
  • Side wings offer additional protection in side-impact crashes.
  • By law, children must use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135cm tall – whichever comes first.
  • Safety experts recommend waiting until 150cm before moving solely to the adult seatbelt.
  • At this stage, a booster cushion can be used, but it is not recommended. A high-backed booster remains the safest option, as it supports the head and neck.

Key Safety Tips

  • Always check labels: Only EU-approved seats (marked with an “E”) are legal in the UK.
  • Don’t compromise on second-hand seats. Always ensure your car seat is right for the job – your child’s safety is too important to risk. Check that your seat displays the required legal information and safety certifications.
  • Isofix vs Standard Fitting: Isofix seats connect directly to built-in car connectors, meaning there’s less chance of getting the fit wrong than seatbelt-installed seats. However, not all cars have Isofix – check with your car manufacturer which seats are approved for your vehicle.
  • No bulky coats: They create dangerous gaps between harnesses and your child’s body.
  • Fit matters: Harnesses should be tight enough that you cannot pinch the webbing (strap).
  • Regular breaks: Car seats aren’t designed for long naps outside the car. Take breaks during long trips to let babies lie flat.

Don’t Rush the Next Stage

Moving your child up too soon is risky. Each stage of the car seat is carefully designed to match your child’s height and weight. The longer your child stays in the appropriate seat, the safer they are.
Your child’s safety is worth every precaution. Take the time to choose the right seat, fit it correctly, and use it for every single journey – no matter how short. Because when it comes to protecting the ones you love most, there are no shortcuts.
